What is the EBS Spectrum?

The FCC granted a large number of licenses for the 2495-2690 MHz spectrum to a long list of schools across the United States known as the Educational Broadband Service. If it can not be proven that the licensee is utilizing the band for "substantial service" by May 1, 2011 then the license will be revoked.

Does My School Have a License?

Many schools hold these licenses and are unaware of it. It's best to check with your technology department or do a quick search on the FCC's website. Simply search your city or state and input 2495MHz - 2690MHz as the frequency range. You need to act quickly in order to keep the license.

What Are My Options?

You have three ways to maintain your license:

NEWS
FCC EBS Band Plan
The BRS/EBS R&O & FNPRM created a new band plan for 2495-2690 MHz. The new band plan eliminates the use of interleaved channels by MDS and ITFS licensees and creates distinct band segments for high power operations, such as one-way video transmission, and low power operations, such as two-way fixed and mobile broadband applications. The new band plan will enable BRS and EBS providers to use the 2495-2690 MHz spectrum in a more technologically and economically efficient manner. The new, more flexible rules will facilitate the growth of new and innovative wireless technologies and services, including wireless broadband services that have the potential to compete with cable and DSL broadband providers and to extend broadband service to rural and underserved areas. The rules adopted today also preserve operations of existing licensees, including educational institutions offering instructional television programming to their students.
